In 2008 I wrote a piece for the Crash Ensemble, called forced march. It’s a loud piece – very exciting, lots of change, high energy. Since I had already written one of those kinds of pieces for Crash I thought I would try to do the opposite with this one and write something more relaxed, with a much more gentle vibe to it. I started thinking that the piece needed to have a ‘super chill’ affect and, when that description became the guiding principle of the composition, super chill became the title.
Crash Ensemble commissioned super chill in honor of its 20th birthday. Happy Birthday, Crash Ensemble!
